Printmaking Classes

    Saratoga Arts is excited to have open access for our printmaking studio! We offer open studio access to individual community members to come utilize the space to work on individual projects and grow their art practice!

    Our space is an environmentally friendly studio that facilitates people of all experience levels as a place of experimentation and discovery of the magic of printmaking. 

    You must read the guidelines and sign a release of liability to use the printmaking studio on your own.

    Community members looking to use this space must provide proof that they are experienced with one or more printmaking mediums.

    • Community members who have experience in one or more printmaking mediums may utilize the space with permission of Ally DeRusso.
    • Community members without experience in printmaking are asked to attend Saratoga Arts classes or workshops to learn one or more printmaking processes. Upon completion of classes individuals may purchase open studio access time.

    Community members must sign a contract stating they have read all the guidelines and agree Saratoga Arts is not liable for any injury that may occur in the shop.

    Saratoga Arts provides a variety inks, equipment, and tools. Community members must supply their own paper, plates/blocks, etching needles, scrapers/burnishers, carving tools, etc. 

    Purchasing studio access helps us cover cost of consumable goods like newsprint, inks, cleanings supplies, and maintenance of the shop.

    After purchasing your open studio time package, you can book time using our booking system here!

     We are looking to expand our open studio times in the future! If you have experience and would like to be a printmaking studio monitor email printmaking@saratoga-arts.org

    Join us for Community Print Night! Evening hours for open studio access with the chance to meet other printmakers and discuss ideas!

    Shared consumables like ink, newsprint, cleaning supplies, etc. are provided. Bring your own plates/blocks and paper. We have carving tools, brayers, scribes, etc for you to use!

    Open to those who are just beginning their printmaking journey and those who have years of experience!

    Pre-registration required as there is limited space!

    Introduction to Pronto Plate/Polyester Lithography

    taught by Kathy Klompas


    Learn Pronto Plate/Polyester Lithography, a non-toxic and inexpensive printmaking method to create a lithographic print. It is an excellent introduction to concepts of lithography. Students will be able to create photographic prints or draw directly onto their plate.

    All materials and tools will be provided for the class.

    Introduction to Gelli Plate Printing

    Creating Monotype Prints using Objects from Nature

    Gretta will demonstrate how to use objects from nature to create one-of-a-kind prints. Students are encouraged to bring in objects from nature that can lie flat, such as: leaves, petals, pine needles, seeds, etc. She will have examples of prints.

    Introduction to Woodcut

    Woodcut is the oldest form of relief printmaking. In this one day workshop, students will learn the basics of woodcut printmaking, including transferring an image to a block, various approaches to carving, and producing a series of prints.

    Learn Drypoint Etching!

    Take the opportunity to learn drypoint etching! Have you ever wished you could take a drawing or a sketch and reproduce an exact copy multiple times over? Drypoint etching is one of the most straightforward printmaking methods to achieve something to that effect. Whether you’re looking to transfer your drawing/printing skills to another medium, or to learn something new entirely, drypoint etching meets artists at any level and brings exciting results!

    Introduction to Monotype

    taught by Kathy Klompas

    Learn the fundamentals of working with printmaking ink and using a press. Mix transparent inks, use a brayer to apply ink to a printing plate, register multiple plates, understand how layers of ink reveal new colors on the surface of the print.

    Students who have taken this class previously are welcome to take it again!

    The Magic of Kitchen Lithography

    With its chemicals and bulky equipment it's no wonder why lithography is seldom done outside of the studio. Thankfully, that is a thing of the past! Using common household items and a few select printmaking tools, learn how to etch with Coca Cola to pull prints off of aluminum foil.

    Pint N' Print

    with Ally DeRusso

    Come enjoy a fun evening where you can try out printmaking! This event is an informal activity where you will learn how to carve and print a block print! What is a block print? Block prints or linocuts are a type of relief printmaking. Using carving tools you cut away the linoleum to create your design, what is carved away will be white and the remaining areas will be inked! A brayer is used to roll ink onto the block and can be printed by hand or with a printing press. Saratoga Arts will be supplying beverages, supported by Nine Pin and Walt Whitman Brewery, as well as non-alcoholic beverages. 

    Must be 21+ to register.

    Introduction to Linocut

    taught by Jean Ellen Sotansky


    Learn an overview of linoleum printing or "block printing".  You will learn how to translate a drawing onto a block, how to carve, and print! We'll make two blocks in this class. Beginning with a single color block that is 5 x 7 inches. Then we will create multi-color prints in a larger size!

    Beginner Drypoint

    taught by Christian Wechgelaer

    Learn the very basics of drypoint intaglio on plexiglass! Drypoint intaglio is a technique where you draw directly onto a plate using an etching needle. You will learn how to translate your drawings to a plexiglass plate and how to print the plates. 

    Session 1: Sketching an image or collage that you will learn how to draw on a plexiglass plate

    Session 2: A demo reviewing the steps of printing a plate will be given, then you will print your own plates!

    All materials and tools will be provided for the class.

    Exploring Monotype

    Collage and Drypoint

    taught by Christian Wechgelaer

    Learn the art of collaging while printing! This technique is called chine colle, it can be used to add a background color or selective coloring to your prints. Drypoint intaglio is a technique where you draw directly onto a plate using an etching needle. You will learn how to translate your drawings to a plexiglass plate and how to print the plates. 

    Session 1: You will learn to create a drypoint plate on plexiglass, be shown how to print a plate, and how to add collage elements to work!

    Blind Embossing: Print Without Ink

    taught by Emily Roztocil


    Learn the basics of blind embossing/debossing! What is embossing/debossing? It is a technique that uses pressure to press textures and designs into paper. No ink is required to create an image! This class considers how to create an image or design, without common parameters like hue and value. You will learn a variety of embossing methods and at the end of the course you will have the opportunity to combine techniques and create personalized works.

    All materials and tools will be provided for the class.
