Laraaji & Lip Talk: An Evening of Improvised Sound Wednesday, September 23, 2026 7:00 PM Doors / 8:00 PM Presented within the immersive exhibition Youngworld: The Mantis Shrimp Matrix
tiny desk youtube link: https://youtu.be/apUE3nAeszw?si=hjV2lu30iMpmQFoW
Laraaji is a legend of ambient and new-age music — a multi-instrumentalist whose innovative work on piano, zither and mbira has cast a wide, gentle glow across half a century of sound. His 1980 album Ambient 3: Day of Radiance, produced by Brian Eno as part of Eno's landmark Ambient series, remains a touchstone of the genre. In 2023, Pitchfork named his reissued Segue to Infinity "Best New Reissue," noting that it "cements him as a preeminent figure in ambient and new-age music's history." In recent years he has brought his luminous playing to Big Thief's Double Infinity (2025) and the Marty Supreme soundtrack, and his Laughter Meditation Workshops continue to travel the globe.
Laraaji is also a longtime teacher and mentor of Capital Region native Sarah Pedinotti (Lip Talk), a multidisciplinary musician, artist and storyteller. Pedinotti is honored and thrilled to present her mentor in this series.
This evening of improvised sound brings Laraaji and Lip Talk together in an open, unfolding musical conversation — two voices in dialogue within the exhibition's living, shifting environment. It is presented as part of the ongoing program of Youngworld: The Mantis Shrimp Matrix, an immersive installation built from recycled and ocean-bound materials that centers on radical empathy and coral reef rehabilitation. Tickets are $25 Get tickets here!
