Intro to Dyeing Wool Fibers & Yarn

    taught by Nan Travers

You will learn some different techniques for dyeing wool fibers and yarn. We will be using acid dyes and varying the process to achieve different outcomes. White wool fibers and white wool yarns will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own wool fibers and yarn to overdye. If you bring your own, please make sure that the fiber and yarn are mostly or completely wool (animal/protein fiber). Cellulose fibers (e.g., cotton, flax) will not dye (but can stain) in acid dyes; as a result, blended fibers and yarns can have an interesting effect.

Students are welcome to play once they have learned the basic techniques. This session is good for beginners as well as people who already have experienced dyeing.

Students should wear old clothes that can get splashed with dye. If you have a waterproof apron, please bring; the teacher will also have some.

All materials and tools will be provided for the class.

    Indigo Tie Dying

    taught by Kathy Klompas

Shibori is a Japanese tie-dye technique dating back to the 8th century; the uneven lines created by this method are a visual representation of the Japanese belief in the beauty of imperfection. You will learn how to clamp and tie your fabric to create unique patterns with indigo dye.

Bring your own cloth items (up to 7 items made of natural fabric-cotton, linen, silk, pre-washed) such as a t-shirt apron, kitchen napkins or towels, etc. to dye. Or purchase a $10 scarf from the teacher.
