Artist Statement

Born in West Virginia, raised in Baltimore MD. Sam attended the Bryn Mawr School for Girls. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, she moved west and began skiing, going on to become a professional ski patroller and sponsored skier for Alta Ski Area, Roxy, and Surefoot as a Freeskier internationally.

She grew up in a family of orthopedic surgeons and doctors, and after decades of dodging the medical school future they had planned for her, she acquiesced and became an acupuncturist, completing her doctoral studies in San Francisco.

Having lived in New Zealand, and spending her early 20s out west, she gave up her life in the mountains she returned east with her husband and returned to her first love, horses, not only riding horses, but painting them.

Sam won her first art prize at 4, and went on to win numerous awards as a student, and was given her high school art prize.

Without any formal art education, she randomly picked up a brush after decades of not creating visual art, and painted two pieces that both were accepted into the then annual AAEA exhibit.

A long pause followed that brief return to art, and it was only a decade later after having kids, who were constantly asking her to draw things, that she rediscovered her love of art.

A definite figurative, representational artist, she has no ambition to explore abstraction, other than by accident.
