Artist Statement
Natalie Boburka is a mixed media artist whose work in several series focuses on either the sensuality of the medium or cognitive conceptual art as its inspiration. She has over 40 years of experience learning about different mediums, supports, and techniques both formally through workshops and classes as well as through experimentation and preparation for teaching. She has been environmentally pro-active, growing up camping and hiking on a regular basis. This influence caused Boburka to regularly utilize throw-away, and discarded materials as well as found natural ones. Recently, she relocated from Round Lake back to her birthplace in the Catskills renovating an 1826 brick house with a large barn/studio structure surrounded by woods and fields. “ I’m immersed in the natural world from the moment I wake up providing an idyllic setting to create from.”
The “Happy Abstract” series uses a plaster like base to create real texture and then relies on layers of color added and removed to create sensual memories of different environments. Some include embedded objects found at the beaches and in the water. Many are based on the concept of gardens both above and below the water. Some are based on oceans both on the Maine and Florida shores. Their creation is joyful and the changing palettes representative of different geographical locations expose new hues and challenges to work with.
