Artist Statement

As an on-site portrait artist, I depict the character and mood of my sitters in just a few curvy lines, in the spirit of Rodin’s sketches. I enjoy playing with color value and using bright hues to intensify the illusion of movement, as Kandinsky also did, evoking fantasy and escape. The playful simplicity and blunt intensity is a neo-neo-expressionist style that recalls Basquiat.

STOP : ACTION is a record of my life as I have transitioned from the social strata of undergraduate studies into a new maturity and lifestyle, as a parent and friend in today’s cultural environment.  These works strive to highlight how posture and expression communicate interpersonal and environmental response.  My gestural process and focus on sensory qualities of art materials lend to a storyboard technique.  An ongoing study of how graphic novels use 2D application to communicate information, and how that information is disseminated and retained, is also reflected in this work.

I mould my art practice as a graduate student at VTSU Johnson, aspiring to teach art at the college level.  I have fell in love with the unique innovation that grows in this region.  I want to nurture and bring awareness of that creativity.  By making art and encouraging others to make art, on the local level, we stand a chance at diverting negative global affect.
