with Chris Levy

Pysanky (Ukrainian-style Easter eggs) are a traditional folk art which has been practiced in many Eastern European countries for centuries. The colorful decorated eggs symbolize the release of the earth from the shackles of winter and the coming of spring with its promise of new hope.  Pysanky techniques, designs, and traditions have been handed down through generations and the art is alive and well modern times! In this class, students will learn how to decorate eggs using traditional tools, batik methods, bee's wax and dyes. Students will learn about the history of pysanky, the traditional meanings of the designs, and some of the associated folklore.  Each student will take home their creations. Explore the art, symbolism and joy in creating traditional Ukrainian Pysanky eggs in this creative class! A materials fee of $5 is due to the instructor at the beginning of class. Class size is limited to 10 students.
