Laraaji is a legend of ambient and new-age music, a multi-instrumentalist whose innovative work on piano, zither and mbira has cast a wide, gentle glow across half a century of sound. His 1980 album Ambient 3: Day of Radiance, produced by Brian Eno as part of Eno’s landmark Ambient series, remains a touchstone of the genre. In 2023, Pitchfork named his reissued Segue to Infinity “Best New Reissue,” noting that it “cements him as a preeminent figure in ambient and new-age music’s history.” More recently, he has brought his luminous playing to Big Thief’s Double Infinity (2025) and the Marty Supreme soundtrack, while his Laughter Meditation Workshops continue to travel the globe.
Laraaji is also a mentor to Capital Region native Sarah Pedinotti, who performs as Lip Talk, a multidisciplinary musician, artist and storyteller. Pedinotti is honored to welcome her mentor into the world of Youngworld for this special performance.
The evening brings Laraaji and Lip Talk together with drummer, Sarah Galdes for an open, unfolding musical dialogue within the exhibition’s living, shifting environment.
Before the performance, Pedinotti will give an artist talk, followed by a talk by biologist Dr. Kate Feller, Professor of Biology at Union College, who will introduce the extraordinary visual world of the mantis shrimp and the science of its perception.
The performance is part of the ongoing program surrounding Youngworld: The Mantis Shrimp Matrix, an immersive installation built from recycled and ocean-bound materials and centered on questions of perception, radical empathy and coral reef rehabilitation.
