Intermediate crochet-Amigurumi Star Charm

taught by Kaila Kurz

This class will be an intermediate approach to crochet, perfect for getting into the knitty-gritty techniques to level up your work. We will be learning skills including the magic circle, crocheting in the round, reading intermediate chart crochet patterns, changing color and how to perfectly stuff a basic amigurumi shape for our project: a hanging three-dimensional star charm!

Please note: Prior experience with crochet is required for this course including, but not limited to, holding your crochet hook, appropriate tension on your working yarn, and a beginning understanding of the foundational crochet stitches (chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet stitch, half double crochet stitch, and double crochet stitch).

Students should bring the following tools: Assorted sizes 3-4.5 mm crochet hooks (Up-Stitch is a fantastic space in Albany to find gently used hooks in a variety of sizes).

All additional materials needed for class will be supplied.

About the instructor

Kaila Kurz is a Queer Dis/abled local artist and educator. She enjoys dabbling in all art forms, but has really found a home within fiber arts and her preferred medium of micro-crochet. Her work is meant to be lived in, using various fiber types in the form of quilting, embroidery, and lace-weight crochet threads that are juxtaposed with metal findings and stones to create movement within her jewelry. Her inspiration is focused on contrast between oppositional forces, and the seeming contradiction of dainty, fine art that is meant to be worn, used, and touched on an everyday basis. During the week, Kaila can be found teaching K-12 Special Education Music at Capital Region BOCES. She firmly believes in access and equity within educational spaces, including the fiber arts, and you can often find her pulling fellow-crocheters aside at markets to show them the tips and tricks she has found to make crochet more accessible for all.
