Drawing to Print: Copper Plate Drypoint Etching

In the class, you will learn about working with a copper plate to translate your drawings into a printable matrix. We will be using the technique drypoint, which is where you draw directly onto a plate using an etching needle. We will cover how to polish your plate, bevel your edges, draw onto copper, and use the printing press. You will be guided through each step of the printing process and leave with a few prints of your image!

No experience necessary! All levels are welcome. This is a great introductory class for those interested in pursuing other etching techniques using copper.

All materials and tools will be provided for the class.

After taking a printmaking class, you have the opportunity to sign up for open studio time to work on your own projects!

This course is designed for students who have prior experience with oil painting and wish to further develop their technical skills and personal approach to landscape painting. Students will focus on interpreting landscape subjects with a greater emphasis on light, depth, storytelling, and developing a personal approach to painting landscapes.

Work will be completed using both photo references and direct observation. Through demonstrations and individualized instruction students will complete 1-2 landscape oil paintings.

About the instructor

Award-winning artist Lisa David was born and raised in upstate New York, where she spent much of her childhood camping in the Adirondack Mountains. Those early experiences sparked a lifelong love for the region and continue to inspire her work. A child of the sixties and seventies with a suburban upbringing that was, at times, a bit offbeat, Lisa finds beauty and nostalgia in vintage subjects—often capturing them with playful energy and a bold use of color.

Lisa began her career running a successful production pottery business. When the physical demands of clay led her to shift focus, she pursued a teaching degree and became a National Board Certified Art Teacher. For 20 years, she taught high school art, nurturing creativity in young artists while continuing to grow her own practice.

Now retired from public education, Lisa teaches advanced drawing and painting at the Saratoga Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY. She continues to paint from her cabin in the Adirondacks, where the landscape, light, and memories of summers past still fuel her artistic passion.

In this hands-on adult art class, students will explore drawing and painting birds through a variety of approachable techniques, inspired by Amy Tan’s The Backyard Bird Chronicles. We’ll begin by practicing sketching basic bird shapes using pencil, then move into expressive brush and ink work. Students will follow a step-by-step watercolor demonstration to paint a bird, enhancing details and texture with colored pencils. Drawing inspiration from Tan’s observations and artistic journaling, each student will select one of their bird studies to transform into a mixed media collage, combining drawing, painting, and layered materials for a unique final piece. No prior experience is necessary—just curiosity, creativity, and a love of birds.

Participants will explore the creative possibilities for expression using yarn. Participants will create several small works and design their own personal project which they will start in class and take home to complete.

Meet the Instructor:

Alice Kaplan is an inter-disciplinary artist who primarily paints in oil and acrylics and also creates beaded jewelry and textile art and in original designs. She maintains a studio at 79 Beekman St. in the Saratoga Springs Art District where she has various works on display in the stairwell gallery. She has participated in various group shows, member shows and art events in upstate NY with the Beekman Street Artists Group, Saratoga Arts and Saratoga Springs Art District Inc.

Alice has also volunteered for many years teaching arts and crafts to children in the Saratoga area, both as a Girl Scout leader, and as a member of the Saratoga Springs High School Drama Club technical team where she has coordinated scenic design for more than a dozen musical productions.

Hello, my name is Caleb. I have been making art for as long as I can remember, beginning with pencil drawing as a child and expanding into painting and other mediums over time. I currently work as a carpenter, but maintain an active artistic practice across a range of materials, including oil paint, watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink, and graphite. I believe that once an artist’s eye is trained, it can never be turned off.

This course is for everyone from curious beginners to experienced fiber artists! We will take raw wool and fun embellishments to create a beautiful art vessel (similar to a pottery bowl, except made of felted wool!) Using a variety of techniques, you’ll learn how to transform wool into felt and make your own custom vessel which you can use to hold trinkets, dried flowers or just for a beautiful decoration in your home!

You’ll learn about the various types of wool, embellishments and supplies used in wet felting along with all the techniques, such as ‘shingling’, wetting, rolling, in order to create your finished product.. Skills you can use in your own future use to wet felt objects at home!

Students must bring their own bath-size towel (as it’s not called ‘wet’ felting for nothing, ha!). All other supplies for this class will be provided.

She has a love for sculpture as well and has taught drawing, painting in all media and fiber art to students throughout NY and New Mexico. In this class, you’ll complete a 9 × 12 inch colored pencil drawing on black paper and learn foundational techniques for working with colored pencil. We’ll explore how to build form, define edges, and layer color in a clear, step-by-step way so you can create a drawing with depth and clarity. Students may choose to draw a floral subject or another simple object of their choice.

A 24-piece set of Prismacolor Premier pencils will be provided, and students are welcome to bring additional pencils if they wish. You may also bring personal reference images—one in color and one in black and white—or work from reference images provided by the instructor.

Beginners are welcome! I will meet you where you're at. This class can also be taken repeatedly, as I will guide you through different subjects and color combinations.

About the instructor:

I am drawn to the complexity of plants, their similarity to human beings in terms of physical structure and needs, and the ongoing impact that plants and people have on each other. I love how the process of making relief prints leads me to look at driftwood and dead trees in a new light. Studying the form, notches and textures of the trees, many of which are over a hundred years old, reveals the individual struggles and stories of beings that exist on a time scale beyond human life. The neuron-like appearance of roots and the bone-like forms of knotted branches evoke a human presence and remind me that we all depend on the purity and accessibility of soil, sun and water in order to live.

My art practice is a way of focusing on the bioregional diversity around me and building a stronger connection with the natural world. While growing up and living in cities, I frequently found myself without a sense of belonging to a place: melancholic and restless. After the opportunity to live in rural upstate New York, surrounded by acres of living forest and cultivating a garden, I realized how a connection with the earth gives me a sense of place and contentment. My work offers viewers the experience of careful attention, respect, and micro-level fascination that I bring to my interactions with the plant kingdom. The goal of my practice is to strengthen our desire to maintain the intricate systems of the natural world so that future generations will have access to outdoor places full of rich diversity and interdependence.

Find Your Voice: A Poetry Workshop for Self-Discovery

In this three-hour intensive, poet, journalist, and therapist Natalli Amato will guide participants on a journey of self-expression using poetry as the medium. Together, we will begin by reading and discussing poems by masters of the craft. Students will be lead through a guided meditation intended to connect the heart center and instill confidence in expressing one's truth.

The rest of the workshop will be dedicated to writing our own poetry, guided by prompts inspired to help us hone our unique tone, style, and identity on the page. There will be time to share and discuss our work together.

No previous writing experience is needed for the workshop. Just come with an open mind and heart! Students are asked to bring a blank journal and writing utensils with them to class.

About the Instructor

Natalli Amato is an award-winning writer, 200-hr Bhakti yoga teacher, certified Reiki healer, podcast host, and pre-licensed marriage and family therapist. She guides individuals, couples, and groups as they experience deeper levels of connection, creativity, and fulfillment in everyday life through in-person and online offerings.
Dedicated to sharing stories of the human spirit and the tools we need to thrive, she has written for Rolling Stone, Vice, Chopra Global, Spirituality & Health Magazine, Her Agenda, and Saratoga Living, among other publications.

She has authored four books of poetry. Her most recent, North Wind, was shortlisted for the Eric Hoffer Book Award. As a therapist, she sees clients at the Found Bridge Center for Connection in Glens Falls, New York. She operates under the supervision of Diana Palmer. She teaches yoga at the Hot Yoga Spot and Yoga Mandali in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Natalli hosts workshops throughout the north country and beyond. From Sackets Harbor, New York, she now lives in Saratoga Springs. In her free time, she loves hiking and is aspiring to become a 46er.

In this class, you’ll bring florals to life through an 11 × 14 inch colored pencil drawing on toned paper. With a focus on shaping form, softening and sharpening edges, and layering rich color, you’ll explore how light and depth transform a drawing into something luminous. This course invites you to slow down, observe closely, and develop confident colored pencil techniques while creating a floral piece that feels vibrant, dimensional, and full of presence.

This class is an intermediate level class. Please bring your own set of Prismacolor Premier colored pencils (the bigger the set, the better, a minimum of 48 pencils is recommended), eraser (Primacolor magic rub eraser or similar), and sharpener (Kum Wedge or similar). You’re welcome to bring reference images of your own.

Paper, reference images, and sketching pencils will be provided.

Introduction to Copper Plate Etching

In this class, you will learn about working with a copper plate to translate your drawings into a printable matrix. Etching is a printmaking technique where an image is created by incising into a plate. The ink is held in the recessed areas of the plate by carding on ink and wiping off the excess.

You will be guided through the whole etching process, from polishing your plate, and etching your final design in the acid bath. Then you'll learn the whole printing process including, how to use an etching press, inking and wiping your plate, and dampening and drying your paper. You will leave with a few prints of your image!

As part of multi-session printmaking classes, you have open access to the printmaking studio outside of class hours, for the duration of your class!

No experience necessary! All levels are welcome.
