Tempered By Memory

In the spring of 2010, Saratoga Arts was contacted and encouraged by officers stationed at the Saratoga Springs Naval Support Unit about bringing steel artifacts from the World Trade Center towers from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s storage terminal at JFK up to Saratoga Springs. Out of our initial conversations came a shared vision: to create a forward-looking work of contemporary art that equally serves as a monument to 9/11.

Due to their passionate enthusiasm, long years of experience with large-scale projects, and aesthetic talent, we selected the team of John Van Alstine and Noah Savett to execute the project. Together with a volunteer team of iron workers, crane operators and a broad range of community-wide support, the artists completed the 9/11 Memorial Sculpture in the Summer of 2011.

Tempered By Memory is the result of our efforts and was dedicated in High Rock Park, Saratoga Springs in the Fall of 2012.

Horses Saratoga Style

During the summer and fall of 2002, Saratoga Arts and the YMCA of Saratoga presented Horses, Saratoga Style, a whimsical and unique outdoor sculpture exhibit featuring 24 fiberglass horses transformed through the creative artistry of 34 visual artists, working singularly, in pairs and, in one case, through collaboration with 11 artists.

These magnificent sculptures were vibrantly brought to life to tell a story or awaken memories of a unique place or time. Horses, Saratoga Style was on public display in Saratoga Springs from June through October 2002.

Horses, Saratoga Style, 2007 followed with 34 uniquely designed and executed creations by artists from the Capital Region, Western New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts. We remain extremely grateful to the businesses and individuals who sponsored the horses and helped make Horses, Saratoga Style a fantastic public art event for the Saratoga region.
