Spring Classes @ Saratoga Arts

Located in the heart of Downtown Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Arts is a hub of arts education for young artists and anyone interested in learning new techniques and building their craft. For Spring @ Saratoga we have brought together adept teaching artists with decades of experience to ensure our students learn new skills while creating challenging works (and of course having a ton of fun!)

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Saratoga Arts follows CDC and OCFS guidelines for educational facilities.  As of March 1, 2022, the mask mandate has been lifted and masks are not required at educational facilities.   We encourage all guests and students to take precautions to keep everyone as safe as possible, such as staying home if you are not feeling well. 


Saratoga Arts will continue to closely monitor CDC and OCFS guidelines and will change the mask policy if need be.

DRAWING AND PASTELS

INTERMEDIATE-ADVANCED PASTELS

Instructor: Carolyn Justice

Students will learn to interpret more complex subjects, explore contemporary directions in drawing, and continue to develop a mastery of technique. There is also more emphasis on originality and the development of a personal style.

Students will further develop their skills and abilities and be encouraged to find increasingly creative solutions for a wide range of different types of projects. Students must bring non-oil pastels, a kneaded eraser, masking tape and several sheets of paper to each class.

LEARNING TO SEE: FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING

Instructor: Griffin McPherson

This is a beginner level drawing course with the goal of introducing students to key fundamentals of drawing in order to break down common roadblocks. Students will learn line control, observation techniques, basic perspective and more. Students are to bring their own supplies.

FIBER AND FABRIC

WEAVING STUDIO

Self Lead

Studio time will be available for students with weaving experience (i.e. can thread a loom and work on their own).

Registration covers the sole use of a loom for a 6 week period. Thereafter, if the project is not complete the work will need to be removed from the loom.

THE FIGURE 


The Open Studio sessions offered by Saratoga Arts, are great practice for any artist interested in working from a live model without the formality of a class.  Models are partially clothed. Open Studio sessions are informal group meetings where artists can talk about their work, share ideas, and discuss a variety of methods and media. There is no teacher for Open Studio. Sessions are recommended for ages 15 and up. Participants can work in the medium of their choice but must bring their own supplies. (Minors need parental permission.)

PAINTING

 

PAINTING SPRING LANDSCAPES IN WATERCOLOR (ONLINE)

Instructor: Robert O'Brien

Watercolor artist Robert O'Brien AWS NWS will teach a two-day online workshop through Zoom and the subject will be the magnificent New England countryside in spring. Light, shadow, value and composition will be emphasized.

The instructor will begin with a demonstration, explaining each step of the process. Students will then paint with the instructor providing hands on assistance. There will be a critique given at the end of the session. Students will need to download the Zoom app. The instructor will email the image he will be demoing from to the class a couple days prior to the workshop. Students must have their own supplies.

PAINTING LANDSCAPES IN OIL (PLEIN AIR)

Instructor: Lisa David

Learn to paint outside (en plein air)! Artist Lisa David will take students through steps to create a painting in hours! This workshop will focus on setting up, techniques and basics to plein air oil painting. 

An easel is recommended - but not necessary.  If you would like to use an easel from the Arts Center please arrive 10 minutes before the class starts to collect an easel (and return it after class). Class will begin in the Arts Center. Students will then paint on location in Congress Park.

ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY

This is a free form advanced photography class spanning 8 weeks. Every time this is offered it is different BUT every time it will push you into areas of photography you may have never considered exploring. The goal of this course is to keep you growing and can be taken multiple times by students that desire a group learning and critique environment.

SMARTPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY 

Instructor:  Thom Williams

"The best camera is the one you have with you", there is debate on the originator of this quote but it is accurate nonetheless. Pretty much everyone is carrying around a smartphone camera so why not learn how to really use it? In this series we will look at composition techniques and functions of your phone camera that you may not have known, and how to maximize those images through the use of editing apps. Finally we will look at multiple platforms to share your photos.

BEGINNER 2 PHOTOGRAPHY

Now that you've learned about the exposure triangle it's time to get into composition. Learn about and practice through weekly exercises, photographic composition rules to help expand your photography. Anyone with a camera and understanding of exposure can take this class. Open to DSLR, mirrorless and camera phone users.
