Sowmya Kanikkannan, Art in Public Places

Virtual Exhibition September 28 - October 25, 2021

My name is Sowmya Kanikkannan and I wear many hats all of which influence my artistry. I'm a physician, photographer, mom, wife, daughter, sister, and friend. The people and the things that influence who I am shape how I see when I am behind my lens. My photographic work is just as much an expression of who I am as it is of the subject matter that I photograph. I capture not just what I see but what I 'feel' - the heart behind the miracles that create life's beauty.

I believe that photographs give tangibility to the things that cannot be seen with the eye but can be felt with the heart. To me, photography is an art that helps us understand and express the beauty inherent within our lives. In my job as a physician, I consider it an honor to help people during some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives.  It is this experience combined with my own life experiences that act as the lens with which I look for beauty in life despite the vulnerabilities that exist. I love sharing this joy with others - just like photography enriches my life by filling my heart with gratitude to be alive, it is my hope that my photographs will instill a sense of wonder and awe in you about at all that life has to offer.

Sunflowers are the ultimate reminder of summer joy – with a little one in tow, summer takes on a new meaning every time I see the joy in my daughter’s eyes when summertime comes along. A visit to a sunflower field, swimming in the community pool and berry picking trips are the simplest things that bring us joy especially after last year’s pandemic summer. I hope that these photographs bring light and life into your hearts as the weather and leaves change color bringing in a new season of hope and apple picking adventures.

Kanikkannan's exhibition is on view virtually September 28 - October 25.
