SARAH HAZE, 2022 juried exhibition

320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY

May 7th - June 11th, 2022

 Artist Statement:

Since 2016, I have created ceramic egg dishes for my business Round Designs. Their simple shape: yellow circle inside wobbly white, has a powerful effect on people, bringing smiles to faces time and time again. Such a simple thing bringing delight to so many really endeared me to the egg as a form.

The pandemic slowed the pace of my ceramics business and I found myself drawn to painting. Then, early in 2021, I found out I was pregnant. Eggs felt like the perfect symbol for fertility, gestation, and future possibilities. Having tried for years to become a parent and having experienced loss in the past, I had a lot of big feelings around this pregnancy. So I painted. The resulting paintings are snapshots of, and a way to process, feelings surrounding parenthood, pregnancy, loss, soul, and sovereignty. And since it is difficult to avoid when working with eggs, they also bring me joy.
