Olivia hoover mahoney, 2022 juried exhibition

320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY

August 20th - September 24th, 2022

Artist Statement:

I am an abstract-expressionist painter, and I work primarily with oil paint on canvas. My goal as an artist is to make work that is experiential, because creating a painting is a sensory experience for me. I try to let the material itself dictate the journey of the painting. Oil paint is a sensual, tactile thing, and I enjoy allowing it freedom to move and flow. The goal of my work is to trigger a sensory experience for the viewer, be it a memory of something real, or a feeling of something imagined. My work explores actions and reactions, as well as the concept of beauty. I strive to make beautiful and aesthetically pleasing work, but I also wish to deconstruct what it means for a work of art to be beautiful at all. I enjoy creating large, colorful paintings that take up substantial space, as this gives the viewer room to absorb everything the work has to offer.

I am heavily inspired by the work of Cy Twombly, Helen Frankenthaler, Elaine De Kooning, Grace Hartigan, and Joan Mitchell. These legendary abstract expressionist painters pushed the boundaries of what painting could do, and what painting could be. I wish to push those same boundaries for myself and what I am capable of as a painter.
