 Artist Statement:

Formerly Invisible by Marcus Kwame Anderson

“It is sometimes advantageous to be unseen, although it is most often rather wearing on the nerves.” - The Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison

Visibility is a recurring theme in my life and work. As I began the initial sketches for my recent work I found myself thinking of Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man. I thought of how social invisibility impacts the lives of many marginalized Americans. My ink drawings and paintings are a celebration of Black people in particular. Our identity in the American imagination has too often been distorted by pop-culture and shaped externally rather than by ourselves. To quote musician and emcee, Black Thought: “It’s imperative we change the narrative.”

This work is an affirmation of our spirit and refusal to accept invisibility as our status. We shine. We persist. We Love. We are beautiful.
